Sara Taksler Documentary Screening (NU Flipside)

Who We Are

The Northwestern Flipside is a satirical publication (similar to The Onion) and official student group at Northwestern University. We publish new content daily on our website and Facebook in addition to running print issues several times per quarter. It was founded in January 2009 through some combination of hard work, dedication, and blood magic, and it makes approximately 1983.2 people laugh, chuckle, and smile to themselves daily.

What We’re Planning

About a year ago, we were approached by then-Daily Show producer Sara Taksler about a new documentary she produced and directed called Tickling Giants, which follows Egyptian doctor-turned-satirist Bassem Youssef as he starts an analog to the Daily Show on Egyptian television in the midst of the Arab Spring. Sara and her team were looking for student groups around the country to host screenings of the film on their campuses. As a satirical publication, this screening seemed to be a perfect fit for us. The initial screening last spring was modest, but we loved the film. It addressed the role of comedy, the importance of free expression, and political oppression among other issues, which are all topics relevant to many college students today. We felt that this film needed more visibility among our fellow Northwestern students.

Over the next several months, we corresponded with Ms. Taksler and her team in an effort to bring her to campus to present Tickling Giants, describe her process making it, and offer a Q&A session for the audience. We recently have been able to secure a slot in Fall Quarter 2018 and Ms. Taksler has agreed to come speak, provided we raise the necessary funds. The event would be free and open to the public, Northwestern students, and Evanston residents alike. In addition to covering relevant current issues, we feel that an event such as this will be of interest to various students on campus including RTVF, communication studies, Middle-Eastern and North-African studies, political science, English, economics, and history majors among others.

Why We Need Your Help

The cost of putting on an event like this is large, and our annual budget alone is not able to cover everything. Your donation will go toward Ms. Taksler’s speaking fees, room, and board, and her transportation from New York City to Chicago. Your funds will also help cover publicity and promotion in advance of the event!
