Fefu and Her Friends is an often studied but rarely performed play by Cuban-American playwright María Irene Fornés. A piece of walk-through theatre, Fefu and Her Friends has been hailed as a seminal feminism piece with its relevance continuing even today, dealing with themes of existence and individuality in the experience of womanhood. Eight women of different sexualities, abilities, and socioeconomic status are confronted with how the boundaries of proper society restrict or liberate them. With our production of this work, we hope to create an immersive, site-specific piece of art that the Northwestern and greater Evanston community can engage with and respond to. Our goal is to create a piece of art that challenges the conventions of what it means to be a woman in the modern age. We hope that our production inspires dialogue in these communities and that our artistic process empowers women and nonbinary performers and designers to express their vision for gender justice.
