Who We Are
Helicon is Northwestern's premier literary and arts magazine, publishing the best in student art twice a year with submissions from poetry and prose, music and videos, to visual art and multimedia works. Our mission is to advance the appreciation of student art and literary creations within Northwestern and its surrounding communities through the publication of the magazine and fostering of a community around the arts.
Our Project
Along with the publication of our magazine, we want to host a launch event where contributors and other artists and writers can perform for their families, friends, and the greater Northwestern and Evanston community. An open mic event is a long-lived tradition within the literary scene, and it is the perfect opportunity to give Northwestern’s talented artists and writers the recognition they deserve.
An event to showcase the students behind the work in Helicon is a critical part of Helicon’s purpose and has become increasingly important as our goal to foster a welcoming, creative community is more pertinent than ever. A spring launch event to celebrate our print issue aims to showcase student-made art, literature, film, music, and more in a celebration of the arts at Northwestern.
Why We Need Your Help
Helicon just became an independent student organization two years ago. Previously, we were affiliated and financially supported by the Residential College Board (RCB) and had been since our creation. However, budget cuts prevented us from receiving the money we needed to fund events and our print issue from RCB, and we decided to transition to independence. Because this is only our third year as an independent group, this is a critical period in our group’s history in which we need to establish a firm financial foundation for our future activities like launch events that foster community, creativity, and artist recognition..
