Lumi Tutors consists of Northwestern University undergraduate students who volunteer their time to work with high school students in the Chicago Public School (CPS) district. Our tutoring services are entirely virtual and while we have found our organization to be academically effective, face-to-face communication is invaluable. We would like to host the CPS students we have been tutoring throughout the 2021-2022 academic year on Northwestern’s campus to show them all of the opportunities higher education has to offer. During this event our tutoring staff will be given the opportunity to meet their fellow tutors who have also been working hard to uphold Lumi’s mission, as well as getting to convene in a social setting that is dedicated to celebration. They will also be introduced to Lumi’s Executive Board in a more casual setting, as well as getting to meet the students who they’ve been working with across the school year!
It is our belief that Northwestern's community expands beyond the bounds of our Evanston campus, and we strongly feel that our students are part of this. Especially for the students who identify as first generation and/or low income (which many do), a college campus can feel like uncharted territory and we want to help make this transition as comfortable as possible. This day is a chance for us to learn from CPS students, and for our tutors/Executive Board members to showcase their leadership abilities and college expertise as the day commences. We hope to provide support to the next wave of undergraduates and celebrate their efforts coming to fruition
This gift will help us rent equipment and decorations for our event space
