Sailing Team FJ Fleet

UPDATE:

We have reached our goal of $15,000!! We have had tremendous success with our fundraising campaign thus far, and we appreciate each and every one of you for helping us get here! With the remaining time left in our campaign, we are stretching our goal to $25,000 so that we can purchase another FJ and expand our fleet further. We want to say thank you for everyone who has contributed, but we still need your support to reach our goal!!

Who Are We?

The Northwestern University Sailing Team is a student-run club team that strives to make the college sailing experience accessible to a greater number of Northwestern students. The team consists of roughly 75 athletes drawn from every experience level, from total beginner to accomplished sailor. The team aims to be both an educational experience for the new sailors and a platform allowing skilled sailors to sail at a competitive level. The team competes at the collegiate level against other schools in the Midwest Collegiate Sailing Association (MCSA). We hold practice in fall and spring during weekdays, while we travel around the Midwest and across the nation to regattas during weekends. We are trained by a highly qualified coach and led by students in executive positions on the team.

Project Overview:

As a team, we hold practice four days each week in the fall and spring quarters. 420s (double-handed planning dinghies) are used at the overwhelming majority of practices, and many team members do not have experience on different boat models. However, every year we send sailors to several regattas that use FJs, a different style of sailboat. Our current fleet of FJs consists of three boats, all of which are old and in poor condition. As a result, regattas using FJs are inaccessible to much of the team due to our shortage of the boats during practice. This makes part of the sailing experience inaccessible to many of our team members, and our performance at those regattas is also compromised. With your support, we seek to raise the money to purchase new FJ boats for our team. This would allow newer sailors to familiarize themselves with more than one model of sailboat, and would also provide better equipment for our team members preparing to compete in FJ regattas.

Our Goal:

Our goal for this project is to raise $15,000. Currently we are searching for a used fleet that we would be able to purchase and transport to Evanston. With the funds raised, we will be able to buy 4-6 FJs, in new or lightly used condition.
