Sit & Spin Productions exists to expand the definition of theatre at Northwestern University by giving artists of all disciplines opportunities to explore unconventional, risk-taking works. Driven by process and devoted to experimentation, we promote new approaches to existing material, as well as the creation of original or adapted projects. We are dedicated to providing administrative, artistic, and production support for all events in our season.
Our fall slot in Cahn Auditorium is the largest blank canvas for experimentation in student theatre here at Northwestern. The only stipulation provided is that this historic theater must be used in an unconventional way. This one, ambiguous rule has prompted some of the most creative and boundary-pushing theatre to have happened on this campus, including last year’s show, Fefu and Her Friends. In this successful production, audience members roamed the space and experienced the story in an individual way, led by male tour guides who allowed them to step into the oppressive world of the play and relate more deeply to the characters. This year, director Annabel Heacock and producers Kathy Yan and Paia Amelio seek their own use of the theater, through the lens of the play The Visit by Friedrich Durrenmatt. This script allows our artists the opportunity to explore a vast spectrum of creative material, from an immersive train station to the dangers of mob mentality in a small town. This capable and passionate team will ensure a unique theatrical experience which inspires creativity and opens conversations within the community.
