Who are we?
Mahjong Club is a recreational student organization just established this year. Our members come from a diverse range of backgrounds, across many different cultures and fields of study, all united by a common passion for the game of mahjong. The mission of Mahjong Club is to spread Japanese mahjong to the Northwestern community and to create a friendly environment where beginners and experienced players alike can improve and compete. Already this year we held our first tournament, where we had a total of 17 participants. We are well on our way to growing our group of tile fanatics into a full-fledged dojo, but we need your help!
Why this Campaign?
There are two ways of playing mahjong. First, you can use a traditional tile set, which requires you to shuffle the tiles and build the walls by hand. Second, you can use an automatic table, which shuffles the tiles and builds the walls for you, in addition to keeping track of scores. Currently, our club uses traditional sets to play, which is time-consuming and inefficient. In the time it takes to play one game on a traditional set, you can play two games on an automatic table. In order to get the most out of club hours and to fit in more mahjong training, we need an automatic table. It is truly the next step for taking our club to the next level. Therefore, we are pursuing a Catalyzer campaign to raise money for this key piece of equipment.
Furthermore, on campus at Northwestern, the recreational game equipment available to students is somewhat limited, consisting mostly of western games like billiards and air hockey. This is not representative of our diverse student body, especially for the Asian/Asian-American community. If our campaign reaches its funding goals, and we are able to purchase the automatic table, it will be open for ALL students to use. While our club primarily plays Japanese mahjong, the table can be easily be configured to play Chinese mahjong with a flip of a switch. This means no matter which kind of mahjong you play, you’re good to go!
