Who is it for?
This scholarship is intended for incoming medical students who belong to at least one traditionally under-represented minority group in the field of medicine. We want to promote diversity of identities and, importantly, experiences in medicine. As such, the recipient should have a financial need and an application that demonstrates a set of experiences that are not traditionally represented in medical students. This includes but is not limited to low socio-economic status, non-two-parent household, and need-based work experience such as work-study.
Vision
In addition to providing financial support, we want the scholarship to focus on mentorship for recipients. These students generally have to search for support systems and may feel out of place in a prestigious private institution in which many, if not most, of their peers have a middle to upper class background. As such, we will pair each awardee with a mentor who will help them navigate medical school.
Funding source and future goals
The scholarship is initially intended to be funded almost entirely by the Feinberg School of Medicine Class of 2019. One of our goals is to grow the scholarship award over time and encourage alumni and others to contribute to the scholarship as well. While it will start with one student per year we have the intention of expanding to multiple students as we continue to support the fund. Finally, we hope to continue streamlining the mentorship process to create the best possible experience for scholarship recipients.
