Semana de la Mujer

About us: M.E.Ch.A. de Northwestern seeks to bring a critical voice on campus and recognizes that it can only exist if it works with faculty, staff, campus workers, and other student organizations that speak to marginalized experiences because one person’s struggle is everyone’s struggle. M.E.Ch.A. de NU also recognizes that people have made great sacrifices to share radical knowledge and to get us to have access to spaces like Northwestern. We use our-stories as communities resisting oppression to inform our politics. Rather than defining community as consisting of people with shared imposed identities, we define community as people working towards the same goal. This is necessary to unite our gente, wake us up, and help us mobilize with other folks. As MEChistAs we seek to promote self-love, compassion, and critical consciousness.

Our Project: Movimiento Estudantil Chicanx de Aztlan (MEChA) de Northwestern will celebrate womxn of color during Semana de la Mujer, which will take place during Womxn History month in March. Through this celebration we will remember womxn forgotten throughout history, honor womxn who fought for equality, and remind womxn in the community that we must love each other as we continue to fight for recognition and equality because the struggle never ends. During this week we will have programming that centers womxn of color so that the Northwestern and Evanston community can learn more about what it means to be a womxn of color through dialogue, art, and guest speakers. Furthermore, we will also use this week to honor the campus workers who work for their families and this university. We will recognize their place on this campus because they take the time out of their day to make students feel welcomed at this university and will be honored as essential members of our community.

How you can help: We want to make this event possible in order to bring knowledge to the Northwestern community. Student programming is essential to the Northwestern experience and brings folks together as everyone can share their stories. You can donate to our project so that we can bring in a keynote speaker, provide food, create marketing materials, and make personalized gifts for the workers on campus!
