Multicultural Filmmakers Collective (MultiCulti) is a group whose primary goal is to promote diversity in film, television, and the arts. We strive to empower those of multicultural backgrounds in the media community. This includes championing not only people of color, but also women, LGBTQ+, and people who are otherwise underrepresented.
Diversity and representation is of great importance in the media. Our organization works to support initiatives that support diversity in media and media production, and also works to give a microphone to the voices that are already there, but are not being heard.
During our “Spring Speaker” event, our largest event of the year, we host a prominent person in the entertainment industry to speak to current students about how their identity has affected their work and what advice they have for students entering the arts community. In 2016, we brought in Tahir Jetter, director of the Sundance Film pick How to Tell You’re a Douchebag. In 2015, we brought in Ava DuVernay, director of the Academy Award for Best Picture nominee Selma and the first black female director to have her film nominated for a Golden Globe or an Academy Award. In 2014, we brought in Guggenheim Fellow and Fulbright Filmmaker Yoruba Richen.
In order to engage and empower young filmmakers and media consumers on campus, we would like to host a prominent filmmaker. Our goal is to raise $1,500 to help cover the costs of this event, such as transportation and accommodations, screening rights fees, speaking fees, and catering. Any amount helps, and if you aren't able to give, please consider sharing our campaign on social media!
