SASE Sustainability Initiative (SSI)

What is Northwestern Society of Asian Scientists and Engineers (SASE)?

SASE is dedicated to the advancement of Asian heritage scientists and engineers in education and employment so that they can achieve their full career potential. In addition to professional development, SASE also encourages members to contribute to the enhancement of the communities in which they live.

What is the SASE Sustainability Initiative (SSI)?

The goal of the SASE Sustainability Initiative (SSI) is to have Northwestern students become more aware of the sustainability efforts involved in engineering processes. The project would involve bringing in speakers from companies with high-profile sustainability efforts to come speak about how they integrate their engineering processes with their sustainability efforts. Ideally, we would like to bring in speakers from companies that would be of interest to as many SASE members as possible (eg., Apple: product materials (materials science), supply chain (industrial engineering), technology (CS), etc.). Hopefully, by shedding light on these sustainability efforts, our members will look to incorporate sustainable practices and processes in their own careers as engineers and scientists.

SSI furthers all three aspects of Northwestern’s mission. Regarding excellent teaching, SSI will help bring in qualified speakers from high-profile companies to teach about their company’s sustainability efforts. Regarding innovative research, SSI will help Northwestern students learn about current innovations in sustainability and inspire the members to develop their own sustainable innovations. Regarding personal and intellectual growth, SSI will teach Northwestern students about sustainability so that they can look to be more sustainable in their own lives.

Why are we fundraising?

In order to hold quality speakers events for SSI, we require funds for both bringing in speakers and holding the events themselves. In order to bring in quality speakers from high profile companies, funds will be used for speaker fees as well as housing and transportation costs for the speaker. In order to hold the speaker events, funds will be used for renting the event space, renting equipment, and promoting the event.
