Spoon Speaker Series

The Spoon Speaker Series aims to raise the funds to support guest speakers for the Northwestern community, providing informative food-related content.

Who we are:

Spoon Magazine, a student-run food publication, was built to provide engaging and informative food-related content to the Northwestern community. Although today Spoon spans across college campuses nationwide, the organization has its origins here at Northwestern. We remain the only chapter in the country that produces a print magazine.

Our mission at Spoon is to develop our campus’ understanding of the many important ideas pertaining to the food we eat. In addition to this commitment, we work to develop the skills of those within our organization across the disciplines of marketing, writing, photography, sales, and publishing. Our team consists of 13 executive leaders and 70 general members. The size of our organization helps us grow our reach on campus and produce new and exciting content every year. This year, we hope to make a larger impact on the Northwestern community.

Project overview:

This year, our organization has been forced to move to the virtual space. The majority of classes and organizations are also online. As a result, most of the Northwestern community is feeling disconnected from campus. We hope to combat this disconnect by connecting with our community and sharing important information on a theme so central to our lives: food.

Although in previous years we hosted guest speakers within our club, we have never been able to provide large-scale speakers to the whole Northwestern community. Food is an extremely important topic, but often one that holds little space in serious dialogue and instruction. By launching the Spoon Speaker Series, we hope to connect with our school and provide important content that will benefit the community. To host a panel of leaders across food-related industries, we need to raise the necessary funds to pay for their time.

How you can help:

To host speakers for Northwestern, we need to raise money to pay for their time. Spoon works hard every year to raise money to pay for our magazine, in order to make it free for Northwestern students.  This project however, requires more than we are able to provide with our own budget.  We hope that you could help. With your generous support, we aim to raise $5,000. This will cover the cost of two speakers. We appreciate any level of contribution that you are comfortable with.  Please also consider sharing our project on social media to help us reach our goal!
