Medill Investigative Lab

Students in the Medill Investigative Lab are reporting on vital, nationally cited stories related to COVID-19. Support will help students continue this work.

Their coverage of the effects of the pandemic on some of the most vulnerable populations has recently appeared in four bylined stories in the Washington Post, including a major front-page investigation on nursing homes that was picked up by national media and featured on NBC Nightly News. Because of the continuing work of these students, The Washington Post now has a first-of-its-kind searchable database of all nursing homes that have reported COVID-19 cases -- more than 2,500 facilities nationwide. Smaller media outlets are using this data to produce badly needed local stories.   For many of these students, the uncertainty brought on by the pandemic has resulted in the loss of summer jobs and internships, and funding is needed to enable them to continue their important work with MIL in the months ahead. Your support will help provide stipends for students to continue this essential coverage this summer and beyond so that they can develop the experience and exposure to launch their careers.
