Our Team
Northwestern Formula Racing (NFR) is a team of more than 60 students from across our McCormick School of Engineering and Northwestern. We design, build, test, and race an open-wheel formula-style car every year. The design and construction of our vehicle provide students with the opportunity to supplement their world-class education with an aggressive practicum.
Our members work across five technical concentrations including aerodynamics, chassis, electronics, power train, and suspension. NFR is a small organization, and beyond technical application, our team sees opportunities to develop and exercise their expertise in all areas of operation, including management, communication, finance, marketing, and leadership.
For 2019’s car, NFR iterated on NFR18’s designs and worked on improving its power train, suspension, and aerodynamic systems using the previous year’s data and dedicating more time to education and design in the fall. At competition, we got the highest placement in NFR history, sharply improving our static events and jumping 18 spots in ranking.
Our Competition Class: Formula SAE
As registration allows, we compete at two events sponsored by the Society of Automotive Engineers annually, one at the Michigan International Speedway and another previously held in Lincoln, Nebraska, now held in California. Each contains a weeklong series of presentations and events in which vehicles are scored both by their performance on the track and by evaluation by leading industry professionals.
The design cycle for NFR20 is already underway.

Increase the size of your logo on our vehicle and help us get our carbon fiber to keep the car strong and light.
Send us a steel tube frame for 2020’s race car to hold all parts together and keep the driver safe and be invited to major team events such as driving & testing days.
