NU GMMA is a medical mission’s organization that has three primary goals: mentorship, fellowship, and missions. With ties to professionals all over the mission’s field, GMMA provides students with opportunities to learn more about the medical field both in the United States and in the global health context. Events with mentors tend to be more casual, giving students the opportunity to develop their careers in a more meaningful way. Additionally, GMMA hopes to become a microcosm for student development throughout colleges by cultivating relationships with one another through fun activities such as bowling to more academic activities such as library meetups and alumni speakers. Finally, every year, students have the opportunity to participate in a medical mission with professionals in countries ranging from Mexico to Thailand.
With NU GMMA’s unique network of professionals, we hope to spread more public health awareness on campus. One way to achieve this goal is by opening a public health panel where professionals can share their experiences on mission trips. Professionals associated with NU GMMA have worked in countries ranging from Honduras to even North Korea; hearing their perspectives on the service field would be insightful for students who hope to work in the public health sector. Additionally, other events such as hosting CPR classes, vitals training, and other basic medical techniques would prepare students for a lifelong commitment into the medical field. Through Catalyzer, we hope to raise the funds necessary to make these events happen.
